About 90% of Americans over the age of 20 have at least one cavity. If you’re one of them, dental fillings can reduce damage to your enamel, making it easier to bite and chew. At Plenty O’ Smiles, general dentist Narek Ovsepian, DDS, and the team use tooth-colored fillings to repair tooth damage caused by decay. Fillings Q & A

What are fillings?

A dental filling is an oral restoration that repairs damage to your tooth enamel caused by decay. Getting a filling is a quick, pain-free procedure that typically takes less than 30 minutes. Following your appointment, there’s no recovery period, so you can return to normal activities right away.

What does getting fillings involve?

Before recommending a filling, Dr. Ovsepian conducts an oral exam, looking for signs of tooth decay. If he finds a cavity, Dr. Ovsepian administers a local anesthetic to numb your mouth. Then, he gently removes the decaying portion of your enamel with specialized tools.

After removing the decaying portion of enamel, Dr. Ovsepian rinses your tooth with an antiseptic solution. Then, he applies a layer of composite resin to the damaged portion of your enamel. When the composite resin dries, Dr. Ovsepian applies a new layer. He repeats these steps several times until your tooth returns to its near-original shape, size, and appearance.

Once the anesthesia wears off, it’s normal to experience some increased tooth sensitivity, but that should subside within a day or two.

Do fillings take a long time to set?

The time it takes for a dental filling to set depends on the material used. Dr. Ovsepian and the team offer tooth-colored fillings made of composite resin. The composite resin dries immediately, meaning you can bite and chew right after your appointment.

Is getting fillings painful?

Getting a dental filling is safe and usually well-tolerated. Following your appointment, you may experience some increased tooth sensitivity. To relieve any discomfort, Dr. Ovsepian and the team recommend:

  • Brushing and flossing more gently than usual
  • Avoiding extremely hot or cold foods and drinks
  • Avoiding spicy foods
  • Using a desensitizing toothpaste

If the pain or sensitivity persists, take over-the-counter pain medication.

How long do tooth fillings last?

The length of time a filling lasts depends on your commitment to caring for it. On average, composite fillings last between five and 15 years, but it’s possible to extend their lifespan with good oral hygiene.

Dr. Ovsepian and the team recommend brushing twice daily, flossing before going to bed at night, and avoiding bad habits like biting your nails or opening packaging with your teeth.
